Apple Keynote Recap
On September 12, Apple had a press conference where they announced three new iPhones, an updated Apple Watch, and iOS 12.
The yearly conference was held at the Apple campus in Cupertino, CA. Three new phones were announced: the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR. Both the XS and XS Max are the new version of last years iPhone X. Some of the notable differences is that the XS Max has a 6.5 inch screen, compared to the X’s and XS’s 5.8 inches. They feature a new A12 bionic chip, which is a faster processor. Also, both new phones have improved water resistance, and increased storage capacity. They also come in a new gold finish, an addition to last year’s black and white options. The iPhone XS retails for $999, and the iPhone XS Max retails for $1099, the most expensive iPhone yet.
There is also a less expensive option, the iPhone XR. It is about $250 less than the iPhone XS, retailing for $749. There are many reasons for this price drop. It has a LCD screen instead of the XS and XS Max’s OLED screen, and it only has a single camera instead of a double camera like the XS and XS Max. One distinctive feature of the iPhone XR is the many finishes available. It comes in white, black, blue, yellow, coral, and red. If you buy the red iPhone XR, a portion of the cost goes to (PRODUCT) RED, a charity that is fighting to eliminate HIV and AIDS.
The Apple Watch Series 4 was also announced at the keynote. One of the biggest difference is the size. Both the body and the screen of the watches are bigger, allowing more content to be displayed. It has a new processor and a built in ECG and fall detector, which makes it better for people with medical conditions. It comes in stainless steel and aluminum finishes, and retails starting at $399.
iOS 12, a new software update for iPhones and iPads introduced many new features. It makes almost everything significantly faster. It also introduced group FaceTime, a highly requested feature. Improved augmented reality (AR) was added where multiple people can experience the same simulation. There is also a new app called Measure, which allows you to measure real world objects using your device. Notifications are now grouped by app, which makes the lock screen more organized. A new screen time feature was also added where you can monitor and limit how much time you spend both on your iPhone or iPad and on specific app. The update was released on Monday, September 17.
