The Obama Family Lights the National Tree for the Last Time

President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle light the 94th annual National Christmas Tree Lighting on the evening of the 24th of December, on Thursday.

Barack and Michelle led a 5-second countdown to the lighting of the tree. This tradition started in 1923, with Calvin Coolidge and his wife Grace Coolidge lighting the tree. Warren G. Harding had passed away that summer, and the presidency had been passed to Coolidge.

This year was more loose, but also had very much sentimental meaning for the Obama’s would likely never be back. This year, there was a concert after the lighting, including Garth Brooks, Chance the Rapper, James Taylor, Trisha Yearwood, The Lumineers and Yolanda Adams.

Many were touched by the sentimental ceremony, and the memory of Calvin Coolidge and also Warren Harding stayed with everyone.
